Overnight fire in Independence kills three

INDEPENDENCE, MS (WMC-TV) - Residents of Independence, Mississippi are still in shock after an early morning trailer fire claimed the lives of three people and injured two others.
According to neighbors, a mother and her daughter were two of the victims.

Authorities said the fire started around midnight, and it took about two-dozen volunteer firefighters an hour to bring it under control.

Five people were in the home at the time, and two of them were able to escape. They were taken to The MED with minor injuries, and later released.

"We're conducting interviews with the two individuals that did make it out of the house, so we're trying to determine, trying to gather info from those two individuals," Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said.

Larry Langston knew the victims and said they were good people.

"I just had left here last week and something like that happened and I just couldn't believe it," Langston said.

As fire investigators and law enforcement officials continued to investigate the cause of the fire, others were left to reflect on the sadness of losing a neighbor and a friend.

Authorities said that the trailer was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, and that one firefighter suffered a minor injury to his hand.
