Daycare center employee assaulted during burglary

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An employee at a Memphis daycare center was assaulted by an armed gunman early Monday morning.

The attack happened at 5:45am at Shawna's Prep Academy, located in the 1300 block of Winchester, investigators with the Memphis Police Department said.

Memphis Police say Tarius Johnson, 33,  broke into Shawna's Prep Academy in Whitehaven armed with a handgun.

A day care employee was preparing for the day's activities when police say Johnson broke in, raped her, and then took computer equipment and electronics.

Audrey Phifer, who lives in Whitehaven, said she is disturbed that someone would target a day care.

"I don't know what it is going to actually take to get rid of the different crimes that's taken place here in our community because they've tried everything," Phifer said.

Just more than two hours after the assault and robbery, officers saw Johnson in a fight with two women at Elvis Presley and Old Hickory.

The women told the officers that Johnson was responsible for the robbery and rape.

Johnson was charged with aggravated rape, aggravated robbery, and burglary of a business.

Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning.
