MEMPHIS, TN (AP) - Memphis police say officers on patrol for thieves breaking into unattended vehicles shot and killed a 24-year-old man who resisted arrest.
The shooting - at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday - occurred after officers spotted security guards for FedEx Corp. chasing a man on foot near a company office building.
Police caught the man, identified as Reginald Dewayne Pointer, after a brief chase, and he was shot while struggling with the officers.
The officer who fired the fatal shot - a 10-year police veteran - was routinely relieved of duty pending an investigation.
Police were patrolling the area because of a recent high number of vehicle break-ins.
