Trial of Mid-South teacher gets underway

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - The trial of a former Mid-south teacher accused of having sex with her students got underway Tuesday morning.

Amy Elder, a former Ripley, Tennessee high school teacher, faces 15 different charges.

Court proceedings started with jury selection. That wrapped up around noon and prosecutors have now begun attempting to make their case.

Amy Elder faces charges that accuse her of having sexual encounters with two of her female students.

Elder has been suspended from her teaching job pending the outcome of the trial. However, officials won't say whether or not the sexual encounters happened inside of Ripley High School.

Elder's trial is going on at the Lauderdale County Criminal Justice Center and it is expected to last two days.
