Police search for suspect in sexual assault

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Police are searching for a suspect after a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted Monday morning as she walked to Sherwood Middle School.

According to Memphis Police Major Joe Scott, the attack happened shortly before 7:00am Monday in the 1100 block of Railton. As the girl walked to school, she was approached by a man who asked her if she would help pass out flyers in the area.

The man then forced the girl into a vacant building, where he assaulted her.

Investigators described the suspect as a man in his late 20's or early 30's, 5'9" to 6'2", with a medium build, a light beard, and possibly wearing diamond studded earrings. The man may be driving a large, white, two-door car with darkly tinted windows.

Police urged any students in the areas of Wooddale High School, Wooddale Middle School or Sheffield High School who have been approached by a man asking for help passing out flyers to advise family members and call the MPD's Sex Crimes Bureau. Scott said police received reports in September of a man asking people to pass flyers out near those campuses.

"We may have the same person," he said. "We put out some information earlier in September, but we didn't really have a crime."
