Memphis police continue search for schoolgirl's rapist

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police continue their search for a man responsible for raping a 13-year-old Sherwood Middle School student earlier this week as she walked to school alone.

Police say the girl was forced into a vacant duplex by a man who asked her to help him pass out flyers. Once inside, he raped her.

"I be afraid to walk to school," said Tiara, a 12-year-old who lives nearby. "Because what happened to that little girl."

Sherwood students and their parents are fearful knowing the suspect remains on the streets.

Authorities believe he's the same person who approached a number of other girls over the last month as they walked alone to Wooddale Middle, Wooddale High and Sheffield High School.

Police say the suspect seems to be getting more daring.

"He has not assaulted these girls," said MPD Major Joe Scott. "But he has tried to lure them to the rear of the vehicle."

This time, he went much farther by picking a vacant apartment in which to rape the victim.

Rev. Dwight Montgomery, whose church sits just blocks from Sherwood Middle School, says he does his best to keep an eye on children walking to and from school, and he's hoping others in the community will do their part to help keep kids safe."To be out on the streets when children are on their way to school, during lunchtime, and when they are on their way home -- so they can feel safe and be protected."

The suspect is said to have a well-groomed beard and diamond-studded earrings, and may be driving a large, white two-door car with tinted windows.
