HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - Candidates running for a new judgeship in DeSoto County held a forum Friday to debate the issues.
DeSoto County Court Judge is a newly created position because of escalating rate of juvenile crime. Candidates Celeste Wilson and Jack Turner are vying for the job.
Wilson said he was running for the position "to help parents set boundaries for these offenders, and actually turn them around, so they don't make it to the court where I am currently practicing now and end up in prison."
"I'm running for this position because it's a chance to do some good for the kids in this county," Turner said.
With the current overcrowding situation at the DeSoto County Jail, and the ongoing search for a larger location, space to house juvenile offenders has become a major issue. Both Wilson, an assistant DA, and Turner, a practicing attorney, say keeping juvenile crime rate down is a cooperative effort.
Both candidates said they would make it a priority to look for other alternatives in trying to help young people stay on the right path - and out of the courtroom.
