Neighbors outraged following Thursday night shooting

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South grocery store owner is fighting for his life tonight, and neighbors are concerned about the crime.

The store owner was shot late Thursday night at the Dunlap Grocery on Dunlap Street, as he was packing up for the day and heading home from work.

Now he's here in the hospital, and two shooters are on the loose.

"He staggered over here," Darrell Bell, who helped the shooting victim, said. "I was trying to get him stable, to be still and stuff until the paramedics got here."

Police are investigating, hoping the surveillance camera overhead caught something. But neighbors are not convinced the angle is right.

Neighbors said the doors were already locked, and the store already closed. In fact, the owner already stepped off the curb and onto Dunlap. He was walking down the street toward his van when he was attacked by two masked men, robbed, and shot once in the chest.

Neighbors were upset and confused over who would want to hurt the guy who owns the corner store.

"He's like outside family. I got mad as hell. Still mad. You know, they ain't had to shoot that man," Bell said.

Police are asking for your help in solving this case. They ask anyone with information to give CrimeStoppers a call at 528-CASH.
