Former UT Martin Chancellor McGehee dies

MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) - University of Tennessee at Martin officials say former Chancellor Larry T. McGehee has died at his home in Spartanburg, S.C. He was 72.

McGehee, who died Saturday, was UT Martin chancellor from 1971 to 1979 and left to become special assistant to the president at UT Knoxville, a post he held until 1982. He then became vice president and professor of religion at Wofford College in Spartanburg from 1982 until his retirement.

The University of Tennessee press published a book in 2005, "Southern Seen: Meditations on Past and Present," a collection of McGehee's newspaper columns about people, places and events in the South.

McGehee received national attention in May 1972 by delivering a 2½-minute, 250-word commencement address to University of Alabama graduates.
