Lawmakers looking to get DeSoto crime under control

DeSoto County, MS (WMC-TV) - DeSoto County officials are concerned after several murders in the county. It has lawmakers looking at ways to get crime under control.

DeSoto County had been relatively quiet crime-wise until the past couple of months. The city of Horn Lake had three homicides within a two month period, while Southaven just had its fifth of the year last week.

This is cause for concern.

"Yes, its concerning but when you look at each one of the crimes individually, then try to determine the root cause of it," Chief Darryl Whaley of the Horn Lake Police Department said.

Horn Lake Police Chief Whaley has been the top cop since 1991. He said although his city had not seen a murder since 2005, crimes in most categories with the exception of robberies are about the same.

He gives credit to the involvement of citizens.

"Its not just us, its all of our citizens that work hard with us. They are very good about giving us tips about what's going on in the neighborhood," Whaley said.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Southaven, Chief Tom Long says the recent murder at the Oak Ridge apartments brings the total to five for the year which is a record.

Still, he is pleased with how his department handles crime.

"We're still very pleased with the cooperation we're getting from city government, from the citizens know, with our ability to police here. We are seeing the results of that good police work," Chief Tom Long of the Southaven Police Department.
