Car strikes building; pedestrians injured

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An SUV hit a building Wednesday morning during a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Jefferson and Claybrook.

Memphis police said a black Ford Expedition ran the stop sign at Jefferson and Claybrook, attempting to cross Jefferson, and struck a silver van.

"We've got a possible subject who stated his van was stolen," Major Frank Garrett of the Memphis Police Department said.

When the Expedition struck the van, it crossed the parking lot of the Express Grocery and Deli, where it struck two pedestrians before coming to a stop when it ran into a neighboring home.

Two people inside the silver van were also injured.

After the accident, two people inside the SUV exited the vehicle and ran away.

Witnesses said they hope the driver at fault is found and held responsible.

"Its just a bad street and bad people they come, they don't care, put it like that they don't care," witness Evonte Davis said.

"Really dirty thing to do because they very well could have killed somebody. Cause the guy they ran over was hurt really bad," neighbor Fletcher Zellner said.

Another person at the scene claimed the Expedition was his, and he had been carjacked.  The man was taken into police custody, but has not been named as a suspect.

The pedestrian who was struck was taken to the Med in critical condition. One other pedestrian and the driver and passenger of the minivan were in non critical condition.
