Driving on Danger - Monday at 10pm

Get a good look at the pictures to the right...your safety could depend on them!

These pictures are evidence in two Shelby County Circuit Court lawsuits of two tires – one whose tread peeled right off, another on its way to failure – that were on a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer.  The lawsuits allege the first tire's failure caused a single-car accident that killed a 15-year-old Memphis boy.

At the center of these lawsuits is that DOT code on the tire's sidewall.

Few consumers notice it.

Virtually none know what it means.

But it just might reveal that this tire – sold AS NEW about a year before the accident – was actually FOUR YEARS OLD at the time of sale.

"A tire that's been sitting on the shelf - it may look brand spanking new - and the consumer has no way of knowing that that particular tire could be deadly," says attorney Jeff Rosenblum of Rosenblum & Reisman in Memphis.
