For the first time, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton went on the record to answer questions surfacing amid a federal probe of city contracts.
The F.B.I is looking into dealings between the City of Memphis and several businesses, including a road design contract that involves a longtime Herenton friend.
During a city council retreat this weekend, Herenton told the group that some sworn affidavits will soon be taken to clear up confusion about the city's bidding process.
"It is a misrepresentation for anyone to believe that the mayor can direct a contract," he said.
Herenton didn't say who will give the sworn statements, when they'll be taken, or who will be taking them.
