MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A one-month-old baby is dead, but so far no one has been charged with his death. Monday, many in the community came together to remember the little life lost.
With the raising of a memorial flag, staffers at the Memphis Child Advocacy Center hoped to make a statement about the 13th Memphis child to die from child abuse this year.
"There is something really wrong in our community and children are not safe in their homes," the center's Virginia Stallworth said.
Organizers of the flag raising said the one-month-old child died last month after being rushed to the hospital.
"The medical examiner has ruled it as a criminal homicide, and the child died from blunt force trauma," Stallworth said. "A one-month-old baby is hard to imagine."
Organizers said it's even harder to imagine that the number of Memphis children who died from abuse is double what it was last year.
"Child abuse is just a terrible thing," another attendee of the flag-raising said. "I've had an ex-wife who was abused as a child by a family member. We had a neighbor that abused some children. You know, it's just time to stop it."
Members of Bikers Against Child Abuse turned out to show their support, along with police, abuse counselors, and many others, who are demanding that something be done to break a deadly cycle...
"It has to be stopped," the attendee said. "Once somebody is abused, they're likely to abuse in the future, you know? It just keeps going, and you got to stop it somewhere."
