UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) - A West Tennessee man was hit by a round fired from a high-powered rifle as he went to check on a duck blind near Reelfoot Lake.
Obion County Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder said the bullet hit 44-year-old John Burnett of Paris, Tenn., below his left elbow before piercing his abdomen.
Burnett was shot Saturday while he and three other men were checking on a duck blind they were rebuilding in the Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge near Walnut Log.
One of the men, Burnett's nephew, Luke Burnett, used a belt to make a tourniquet for the wound.
They raced Burnett toward Union City and met an ambulance on the way. A helicopter eventually took him to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis where he was in critical condition.
Vastbinder said authorities are investigating the shooting.
