Wicker to take Senate oath - again - in January

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Republican Roger Wicker of Mississippi will take his oath of office Jan. 6 in Washington, along with other newly elected U.S. senators.

Wicker's inauguration is just a formality. He took the Senate oath Dec. 31, 2007, when Gov. Haley Barbour appointed him to temporarily serve after fellow Republican Trent Lott retired from the Senate.

Wicker defeated Democratic former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in a Nov. 4 special election to fill the final four years of the six-year term Lott started.

Wicker had a mock swearing-in earlier this month in Gulfport. Immediately after the election, his staff didn't know whether Wicker would have the real inauguration during this week's lame-duck session of Congress. Spokesman Jordan Stoick said Monday that Wicker will take the oath in January.
