Coach Cal becomes winningest coach in Memphis history

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Coach John Calipari is now in the history books as the winningest coach ever in Memphis.

More than 18,000 people stayed up past their bedtimes to watch it happen at FedEx Forum.

The game that tipped off at 11 o'clock last night was a match between mentor and pupil.

UMass Coach Derek Kellogg played for Calipari from '91 to 95 during Calipari's tenure as coach of the Minutemen. Then Kellogg was an assistant under Calipari for eight years at Memphis before moving to his alma-mater.

Coach Cal said the best moment of the game came when Kellogg got a huge standing ovation before the game from the thousands of fans packing the Forum.

"They do that ovation for Derek and I just wanted to cry. This is what it's all about. And he wanted it.  Driving down I thought if Derek wins this is a huge game for him, this would be a great moment on national television for recruiting.  And then I said, forget that," Calipari said.

The late-night game tipped off ESPN's marathon of 23 hours of non-stop college basketball programming.
