SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Southaven mother wants justice for her son. Tuesday, Gladys Winkleman said her son John was just trying to help a friend when a suspect shot and killed him.
"It's still really hard to talk about it," she said. "We buried his aunt several weeks later."
Investigators say John Grant Winkleman was shot and killed at the Oak Ridge Apartments in Southaven. Police say the shooting happened after an argument. William Pearce was arrested and charged with murder.
Winkleman said there was no relationship with the woman her son was trying to help, saying her son was just being a friend.
"If you needed help, he helped you, and he didn't ask for anything in return," she said. "All the kids over there where he lived - they loved him."
Winkleman has great sympathy for her daughter-in-law, Angela, and her three grandchildren.
"It's hard enough to lose a spouse, talking from experience, but to lose a spouse when you have little children," she said.
As for the man charged with her son's murder, Winkleman carries very strong feelings for Pearce.
"I really hope he burns in hell, you know? That's where I want him to go."
