Harrah's to close corporate office in Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) -It's not the kind of news anyone wants to get just before Christmas. Harrah's Entertainment is closing its Memphis Headquarters and data center in Cordova. More than 250 people will lose their jobs, 50 people will be relocated to Las Vegas.

"We had heard through the grapevine Harrah's might be moving some corporate offices and shutting down some positions here. It greatly concerned us in this economy that we have right now the last thing you want to do is lose good viable jobs and positions in our area," Brian Stevens of the Cordova Leadership Council.

Brian Stevens with the Cordova Leadership Council said the word may have been out but he did not expect the loss of 250 jobs.

He said most of the jobs were relatively high paying.

"It's going to be hard for them to find jobs at that caliber in the Mid-South in Cordova in this entire area," Stevens said.

Harrah's would not say why the headquarters is moving, but said in a release the time has come to consolidate its corporate functions in one place Las Vegas.

Harrah's spent more than $25 million in 2006 to buy a Cordova building to house its data center. Harrah's said the building is large enough to make this a world class Data center with up to 800 employees. That never happened and now the Harrah's headquarters and data center are leaving Memphis.

Harrah's still has more than 4,000 people working at its three casinos in Tunica.
