Store clerk killed in armed robbery

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A clerk was shot and killed Friday morning during an armed robbery at a store in the 1000 block of Mississippi Boulevard, near Walker Avenue.

Police said a lone gunman entered the store, Sam's Food Market, around 8:30am Friday and demanded money. The suspect then shot a clerk standing behind a counter in the face.

The clerk was taken to The MED in critical condition, where he later died.

Murshid Mohamed, who works the night shift at Sam's said there was no morning in the cash drawer.

"There's no money in the morning.  Nothing," he said. "He just opened up."

Police are still searching for the suspect, described as a short man in his early 20's, wearing a dark jacket.

"The description that we have is very preliminary - very sketchy," Memphis police spokesperson Monique Martin said.

Martin said investigators were hoping for some help. There were two witnesses inside the grocery store at the time of the shooting, and surveillance cameras were rolling the entire time.

And, someone attempted to rob the store Wednesday.

"(I) can confirm that a call went out here yesterday," Martin said. "Don't know the circumstances of it."

Police are trying to determine if the two cases are connected, talking to witnesses, neighbors, and anyone else who could help.
