Brighton police exchange gunfire with suspects

BRIGHTON, TN (WMC-TV) - Tipton County authorities are looking for suspects who exchanged gunfire with a police officer in Brighton early Friday morning.

Authorities said the incident happened around 2:00am Friday, when  Brighton police officer Todd Riggins spotted the suspects trying to break in to the Brighton Pharmacy along Highway 51

Chuck Porter says his pharmacy has been hit twice by criminals in two years going, after the narcotics in his shop.

"I don't know what else we can do," he said. "I've put a lot of money into security since this has happened so many times. I really don't know what else to do."

Friday morning, when Riggins approached the men, a shot was fired in his direction.

"The suspect fired one shot, and then he returned multiple shots," Deputy Chief Donna Turner said.

The suspects fled the scene in what was described as a black Chevy Avalanche with Arkansas tags.  The back window of the Avalanche was shot out.

The shootout was caught on camera by surveillance tapes recently installed by Porter.

I'll just be glad when they quit picking on the pharmacy," he said. "This is a dangerous situation."

Riggins was not injured in the exchange.
