Thieves steal vest, gun from trooper's car

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - Pictures of the Tennessee Highway patrol cruiser tell the tale of a story that began in rural Lauderdale County.

Harrell Branden just recently survived a stroke and lives across the street from where thieves went to town on a state trooper's ride early Friday morning. They ransacked the vehicle, taking K-9 training equipment, a bulletproof vest, and a high powered assault rifle. All of it gone and in the wrong hands.

"We get a mailbox tore up now and then but that's all that happens around here," Branden said.

There have been no home or car burglaries in the area. Investigators said you could barely see the cruiser from the road. It was behind his house underneath a tree.
 
Investigators suspect trooper Robert Williams was targeted.

"He didn't indicate to us that he had anybody that would be following him or whatever," Clay Newman of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office said.  
 
A car theft that began in rural Lauderdale county, but the end is uncertain. causing concern among people there.

"The people that stole that rifle is not going to use it for target practice," neighbor Harrell Branden said.

The AR -15 gun is so powerful it can penetrate a bulletproof vests, so officers want it off the street as soon as possible.
