UPDATE: Police rule death of man discovered after fire a homicide

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police have ruled the death of a man found after a house fire early Sunday morning a homicide.

Emergency crews were called to a duplex in the 2000 block of Jacoby just before noon Sunday.  Most of the damage from the fire was in the rear of the building, where crews eventually found the victim lying in a bathroom suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police have not identified the man, but family members said the victim was 56-year-old Tyrone Gray.

Gray's sister in law, Alberta Wiggins, said she had no idea who would do such a thing, and speculated it was a robbery gone bad.

"He's never had any problem there," she said. "Lived there seven years...never had a break-in or anything."

Homicide investigators have questioned several people, Memphis Police Department spokesperson Monique Martin said, but a motive has not been established, and no one is in custody.

Family and friends said Gray worked at a nearby warehouse. Other than going to work, they said, he always kept to himself.

Friend's said Gray's common law wife of 26 years was a church when the fire started.

Gray's death will be investigated jointly by police and fire investigators, Martin said.
