NCAA announces Indiana basketball penalties

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - The NCAA infractions committee has slapped Indiana's basketball team with three years probation for the university's failure to monitor the dealings of former coach Kelvin Sampson.

It's the first time since 1960 one of the Hoosiers' sports programs has been found guilty of a major NCAA violation.

The case involves multiple violations of telephone recruiting rules by Sampson, who was still on probation for a similar phone-call scandal at Oklahoma. Sampson got socked with a five-year show-cause order, which will make it all the more difficult to return to college coaching. He's currently an assistant with the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.

Indiana self-imposed penalties that include stripping scholarships and strict limits on recruiting for Tom Crean, who came from Marquette after the school bought out Sampson's contract in February. Those will remain in place after likely helping the Hoosiers avoid a ban on postseason play.

Saint Joseph beat Indiana 80-54 today in the consolation round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational, dropping the Hoosiers to 2-and-2 on the season.
