Census bureau looking for workers for 2010 census

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - New jobs are coming to the Mid-South. The Census Bureau is looking for workers to help get statistics for the 2010 census, offering jobs that pay nearly $20 per hour.

The nearly 1,000 temporary jobs involve gathering information for the 2010 Census. The pay in this area for the field and clerical jobs ranges between $12.75 and $20.00 an hour, and range between 20 and 40 hours per week.

The majority of jobs will be for address listers, who will work in their neighborhoods to develop a master address list. Mileage and gas will be reimbursed.

"The first operation - address canvassing operation - they will use handheld computers to report addresses and never go to an office," Tony Jones of the Census Bureau said.

To qualify, you must be at least 18-years-old, pass a written test that shows you can follow directions, and read a map. You must also have your own car or access to a car.

The jobs will begin in March, and can last as long as 18 months with some breaks in between.
