Connie Mathews fired from library job

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Connie Mathews has been dismissed from her job with the Memphis Public Library, Action News 5 has learned.

Mathews, a long time companion to John Ford and the mother of two of his children, started her job at the library November 10th.

Mayor Willie Herenton hand-picked Mathews for the job.

"I'm tickled about it. I really am. Why? Because there is some justice to the system. She should never have been qualified to begin with," Larry Cannon of Friends of the Library said.  Why did she get the job?"

Mathews had no library experience before she started the job and no college degree.  It is a job that requires a person pay meticulous attention to detail, but Matthews' application was filled with spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Cannon said he is surprised she was fired. He didn't think anyone would do it.

"It would be nice if a job like that would be published so that everybody of all races apply, except the chosen ones," Cannon said.

Under new library leadership, all new library positions are appointed by the mayor.
