Mother of Lester Street victim hospitalized after accident

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The mother of one of the Lester Street murder victims is in serious condition after a traffic accident.

Erica Smith was the woman who discovered the bloody scene inside 722 Lester Street back in March.  Her only son, Cecil Dotson II, was stabbed to death inside the home, one of six murder victims.

Now, more tragedy for Smith, after a traffic accident on the interstate Tuesday morning.  Smith's close friend, Pam Randle, said the car she was riding in was hit by a pick-up truck.  According to Randal, Smith jumped out of the car as it spun out of control.

The accident left Smith, a mother to two young daughters, with a broken neck.  According to Randle, she still can't move, and may never walk again.

"She can't sit up," Randle said. "She can't hold them and hug them. I just don't know what that's like, but I do know it's gotta be hard."

Smith is listed in serious condition at the Med.

"She is really heartbroken," Randle said. "She's trying not to show it. She tries not to let people see that, but we already know it."

Randle said Smith's aunt is taking care of her two daughters, but they're not sure how they're going to make it through the holidays without help.
