Tipton Co. toddler critical, police say driver was drinking

BURLISON, TN (WMC-TV) -  Authorities say they believe that the 58-year-old driver of the pickup truck that struck a toddler on Wednesday was under the influence of alcohol.

Brenda Fleming says she's still in shock over the crash that happened near her front yard.

"I thought it was a big dog, you know, run out into the road. So when I got up and looked out my kitchen window, everyone was crying. I said 'no that couldn't be no dog.'"

According to Donna Turner of the Tipton County Sheriff's Department, the 2-year-old boy was struck in the 400 block of Kelly's Chapel Road in Burlison, a small community just west of Covington.

The child was transported by Air Wing helicopter to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center where he remains in extremely critical condition.

"He put this child's life at risk, and there's no telling how many other people he put at risk," said neighbor Andrea Fleming.

Authorities said the driver will be charged with vehicular assault.
