Neighbors hope band of burglars caught will end crime spree

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A band of suspected burglars were busted in the High Point Terrace area. Something that might mean a big break in an ongoing case.

Homeowners packed the clubhouse at Galloway Golf Course last week during a meeting with police. Their fears fueled by dozens of recent break-ins. Now, many are breathing a sigh of relief.

Wednesday morning police nabbed three burglary suspects. Witnesses said the trio crashed their car in a yard during a brief chase.

Dean Franklin and his wife happened to have the day off. They spotted the suspects from their kitchen window as they fiddled with the neighbor's front door.

He said police arrived within two or three minutes of his call to 911.

Greg Kobeck believes the same suspects are likely responsible for the 11 break-ins up and down his street.

"Oh, it's just been one after the other," Kobeck said.

According to Memphis Police, High Point Terrace and adjoining neighborhoods have seen a significant spike in the number of home burglaries. Up as much as 90 percent compared to this time last year. Prompting hundreds of concerned citizens to get involved in community meetings. And show up at city hall during the recent debate over police residency.

But Julie Tate and others are happy there is finally some good news in the neighborhood.

It may be unrealistic to think these guys are responsible for every burglary.

All Memphis Police said is that two 18 year-old suspects and a 25 year-old are in custody.
