Death toll rises in Mumbai attacks

MUMBAI, India (AP) - The number of dead in a series of attacks in Mumbai, India, has risen to 104, with another 300 people wounded.

The dead include citizens of Australia, Japan, Britain, Italy and Germany.

India's prime minister blames what he calls "external forces" for the attacks on at least 10 targets in the country's financial capital.

In an address to the nation, the prime minister says high-profile targets were assaulted in order to create panic.

Nearly 18 hours after the attacks, gunmen appeared to be holed up inside the luxurious Taj Mahal hotel, another landmark hotel and the headquarters of a Jewish outreach group, with foreign and domestic hostages, as Indian commandos surround the buildings.

Americans are among the foreign captives.

A previously unknown Islamic militant group has claimed responsibility for the carnage.
