Thousands celebrate Thanksgiving at Cook Convention Center

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Thursday, thousands of Mid-Southerners celebrated their Thanksgiving with a meal at the Cook Convention Center.

The annual tradition is now in its 24th year, but since so many are suffering because of the economic crisis, it took on a different meaning.

"Look, you see so many children here, so many people that are unemployed and people just finding it very difficult to make ends meet," mayor Willie Herenton said.

The City of Memphis sponsored the event, which included a Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings, entertainment, free flu shots, and free clothes. City leaders were also in attendance including several City Council members.

Vickie Jackson and her mother came by. They were thankful for a meal.

"I'm here today because its Thanksgiving and me and my mom needed something to eat," Jackson said.

The event is anchored by dozens of volunteers who did everything from serving the food to trash pick up. David Williams was one of those volunteers and said its a good feeling to help others in need.

"This is our second year coming out, feeding and clothing the less fortunate. It's always a good feeling when you can get out and help someone out," Williams said.

For many, this was a day to just be thankful for all blessings.

"To get something to eat and when I get something to eat I can pray....and our table was praying and to share what we were thankful for," Tamika Johnson said.
