Record crowds expected at St. Jude Marathon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - Expect Midtown and Downtown streets to be jam-packed with charity runners for the sold-out St. Jude Memphis Marathon next Saturday.

The event attracted 11,300 participants in 2007. This year, organizers limited registrations to 14,000 people in order to assure a high-quality event for all who participate in the full marathon, half marathon or Memphis Grizzlies House 5K.

Saturday's marathon, benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, will bring visitors from all over the world to the Bluff City.

"We get people from every state in the union, and about anywhere from 35 to 40 foreign countries. So, we have foreign runners who come specifically for this sort of thing," said St. Jude Marathon Director Wain Rubenstein.

The schedule of events this year includes a "Friday Night Carbo Load" featuring pasta dishes at Downtown restaurants, and a post-race celebration and awards ceremony hosted by Jillian's.

Organizers recommend moving your vehicle outside the marathon zone the night prior to the event to avoid being stuck in a traffic jam on race day.
