Sheriff's department kicks off Operation Jingle Bells

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The annual tradition of holiday shopping is in full swing and the Shelby County Sheriff's department is starting the annual tradition of Operation Jingle Bells.

When shoppers get busy finding things to give, criminals get busy looking for things to take.

"We're taking patrol of the shopping areas and around the district and just making sure we're seen," Patrick Willis of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department said.
Willis is accustomed to watching over shoppers year round. But starting now, he will have help from dozens of added sheriff's department reserves.

Effective 6 o'clock Friday night, they will be patrolling parking lots from 6 in the morning until closing time.

But they want shoppers to do their part too.

Park in well lit areas, be aware of your surroundings, and do not create crimes of opportunity by leaving your purchases in plain sight.

"And if you do put it in your vehicle, make sure you put it in your trunk or keep it not visible," Willis said.
No matter where you shop this season, take extra precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
"The saying for us is out of sight out of mind. If you do not see police cars and people patrolling, that is going to be,like you said, crimes of opportunity," Willis said.
And while you are protecting your packages, deputies will be making the rounds to protect you.
