State Department issues travel alert for India

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department is warning U.S. citizens still in Mumbai, India, that their lives remain at risk.

A travel alert issued tonight notes that the Mumbai terrorist attacks "in part targeted American citizens and other Westerners for the first time." It says the assaults "tragically demonstrate that even in five-star luxury hotels, security is not equipped to deter such attacks."

The alert says U.S. citizens should take into account what it calls the "new reality" and exercise caution when visiting India. It says "prudent security measures include maintaining a high level of vigilance, avoiding crowds and demonstrations and keeping a low profile."

Meanwhile, President George W. Bush has sent in a team of FBI agents to help India's investigation.

Six Americans were among the nearly 200 people killed.
