Woman flips car, lands in drainage ditch along Getwell Road
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Rescue crews pulled a woman from her car late Monday morning as it was stuck upside down in a drainage ditch.
As emergency crews worked to free the woman, a crowd gathered 15 feet above along Getwell Road. Officials said the woman was driving south on Getwell when she lost control, hopped a curb, went through a fence and flipped into the ditch.
Firefighters were quickly called to the scene, where the rescue was complicated by the steep drop.
"We had to stabilize her so she wouldn't hurt herself anymore, or we wouldn't her anymore, and then use a mechanical advantage," Battalion Chief Ronney Beasley said.
It took close to half an hour and a dozen firefighters to get the woman out of the car and onto a backboard.
Beasley said the weather was on their side during the rescue, adding heavy rainfall would have meant flowing water in the ditch, which could have lead to a much different outcome.
