St. Luke's food pantry gets rewarded for kindness and caring

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - It is considered the best food pantry of the year. Volunteers at Saint Luke's on South Highland have served more than 1,400 meals.

The volunteers who work that pantry are special. All of them are over the age of 70. And while pantry is small on space, it is big in kindness and caring.

Every Thursday, volunteers at the food pantry located in St Luke's United Methodist Church fight hunger for hundreds of Memphians.
"Because some of 'em come in they are almost crying because they don't want to ask for food but we try to make them welcome," food pantry director Molly O'Kelly said.

And of the 117 food pantries in the city, the Mid-South Food Bank voted the operation at St. Luke's United Methodist as the most outstanding of 2008.

"I think the fact that we give not only food but love and caring and we always try to have a good word with them," O'Kelly said.
"Well one of the reason is we take that chapter from Matthew seriously. When did you feed me when did you give me drink," pantry volunteer Beverly Nicholson said.

O'Kelly said a key to their operation is a dedicated group of volunteers.

But even with all the good will, pantry volunteers said there are times when even they get overwhelmed by the number of people who stop by for help.
Every Saturday and Sunday you will also see the volunteers providing hot meals through their soup kitchen.

Organizers said their work would be almost impossible without the help from the Mid-South Food Bank.
