Coast Guard suspends search for missing CBHS alum

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Coast Guard suspended its search Tuesday night for the missing plane and pilot pending "further developments."  However, friends of Zachary Schlitt are still holding out hope, and continue to pray for him and his family.

Austin Sledd is still waiting to hear more about his missing classmate.

"When you hear stuff like this you're never prepared for it," Sledd said.

28-year-old Zachary Schlitt and 35-year-old Darien Peckham disappeared Sunday evening.

The two are both licensed pilots.

Investigators say they were leaving Tallahassee, Florida en route to Tampa when their single-engine plane lost radar contact.

Rescue crews later recovered some debris. However, the aircraft still hasn't been located.

Sledd and Schlitt were both a part of the same graduating class at Christian Brothers High School.

"Zach was just a fantastic guy, had a lot of life and passion," Sledd said.

Sledd said he was looking forward to seeing Schlitt at their 10 year high school reunion this summer.

"Everyone's just a little devastated and crushed that such a strong individual is no longer with us," Sledd said.

Meanwhile, Sledd will now have to hold on to hope that his longtime friend will be found.

A memorial service will be held for Schlitt at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa.
