Capitol Christmas tree lit

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC News) - The lights on the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree were turned on Tuesday evening.

The LED lights, which use less energy, were flipped on by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with the help of Chris Gabrielsen, a 4th grader from Havre, Montana.

Most of the tree's 5,000 ornaments were made by children across Montana as part of a state-wide project.

The 70-foot tree was harvested from Montana's Bitterroot National Forest.

The tree will be lit from dusk until 11:00 p.m. Eastern time every night until January 1, 2009.
