Police investigate murder blocks away from FedExForum

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Many basketball fans were probably already at the FedExForum as shots rang out just blocks away. Now, the search is still on for two gunmen.

The victim's family formed a prayer circle minutes after they learned their loved one was dead. Shot as he sat in his SUV. Its windows shattered as police begin their investigation.

Tonya Mason was a longtime friend of the man who was killed. Speaking out for a family too upset to talk.

"I seen the truck door open and seen him lying on the ground," Mason said.

He is identified by family and friends as Zack Johnson, III, known by most as simply "Third."
"He was  a good man -- friendly with everybody," Mason said.

A man who may have been targeted for his money.

Investigators said the apartment is a suspected "gambling house." They said Johnson was leaving when two suspects approached.

Robbery was likely their motive. Murder became their crime.

"They need to go to jail, they need to go to jail, cause he didn't bother nobody," Mason said.

Detectives questioned several people.

But right now, there's little to go on.  Two men, armed with at least one gun, wanted for murder just south of one of the busiest spots in town.
Police said no one at FedExForum or in the entertainment district is in any eminent danger. As always, they remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings.

Anyone with information on the murder should call Crime-Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
