County leaders to set tax rate in two weeks to fund schools

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - County leaders are trying to set a tax rate that will fund Memphis City and Shelby County Schools.

Shelby County leaders decided to discuss setting the tax rate in two weeks, because right now according to Shelby County Superintendent Bobby Webb there are ideas floating around about long term funding for both school systems in Shelby County.

"There needs to be some amount of natural growth that allowed to come into the school funding area and I think that's what commissioner carpenter was talking about so that each year there could be at least some growth money allowed to go into the schools," Webb said.

The tax rate expected to be set in two weeks, affecting property tax rates county wide.

The superintendent insists he is not requesting any kind of increase and has not for several years. However, they are looking at various formulas long term to get more funding in the classroom.
