Fallen tree damages cars, home in Midtown

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - In the middle of Midtown, just after midnight, Adrian Maver woke up to a frightening sound.

"It's just like a loud, overwhelming, big noise," he said. "I don't know.  It's hard to compare to anything else."

The sound was caused by a large tree, which fell during a rain storm.  The damage was considerable.  Maver said house has was damaged, his station wagon was walloped, and his wife's Buick was bashed.

And the tree that caused it wasn't even his.  It belonged to Maver's next door neighbor, Chris McAfee.  After a day's worth a rain, the tree ripped from its roots and tipped at the base.

On its way down, the tree punched a hole in McAfee's roof, leaving behind a big mess.

"I'm just waiting for insurance to call us back," he said.

Wednesday morning, McAfee said he was ok with an unexpected day off, and grateful no one was hurt.

"Those limbs - some of them are over the kids' bedroom.  Some over their house, some over this house.  I don't think it could've, if it were going to fall, it couldn't have fallen any better."

It was a sentiment shared by Maver, who perched atop the destructive tree.

"I'll probably get another station wagon - something like that," he said. "It's functional."

The total amount of damage caused by the tree has not yet been calculated.
