UPDATED: Woman shot near busy Memphis intersection

Memphis police are investigating the shooting death of a young woman that occured at the busy corner of Poplar Ave. and Highland on Sunday evening. Police say they believe the shooting was a drug deal gone wrong.

The woman was shot in the head at about 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot outside Spin Street Music.

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old April Gibbs.

"It's just devastating," said uncle Fred Savage. "I mean, I'm at a loss of words right now."

Savage said Gibbs was sitting in a black Chevy Impala with her boyfriend when someone shot through the window.  She was rushed to The Med in critical condition, where she later died.

People were holiday shopping when they heard shots fired.

"'I've never seen anything like this before in my life," said shopper Tamika Berry.  "The lady was out on the ground and she was full of blood."

A gun was left behind at the scene.

Investigators are questioning several witnesses, including the man who was in the car with Gibbs.

No suspects are in custody.
