Imposter cop makes traffic stop in Tipton county

COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - Tipton County authorities are on the lookout for a fake cop who's made at least one traffic stop recently in the area.  Even though no other incidents like this have been reported, authorities want to catch the imposter before he strikes again.

A normal Tipton County sheriff's deputy uniform consists of a black cap, tan shirt, and green pants.  But, that's not what an officer was wearing when he pulled a young woman over along Highway 59 outside Covington Saturday night.

"She said a male approached her car dressed in an all green uniform," said Chief Donna Turner with the Tipton County Sheriff's Department.

The victim said a black Ford Crown Victoria with blue lights in the dash stopped her for swerving.

The victim said the cop approached her car wearing a "trooper" style hat and wasn't wearing a gun.

"The series of events that happened after she was asked to step out of the car put question in her mind as to whether or not it was a legitimate law enforcement officer," Turner said.

Police say the supposed cop in this case handcuffed the victim to the steering wheel while he searched her car.  While the victim was handcuffed inside the car, she also noticed there was no police radio.

"Obviously his motive was not theft or to assault her and so there's a question of motive of the traffic stop," Turner adds.

The victim in this case, Mallory Utley, did not want to go on camera but told Action News Five by phone Tuesday it was one of the scariest experiences of her life, and she hopes police will soon find the person who did it.
