Face transplant recipient doing well

CLEVELAND (AP) - The woman who received the first-ever face transplant in the United States is said to be doing well. Doctors in Cleveland say she's showing no signs of rejecting the new face.

Although there have been three other operations like this elsewhere in the world, none of them was as extensive. This is the first one that is known to have included bones, along with muscle, skin, blood vessels and nerves. Eighty percent of the face was replaced with one that was taken from a female cadaver.

There are no details on how the woman was injured. But doctors say before the operation, she lacked a nose and palate, and couldn't eat or breathe on her own without a special opening into her windpipe.

A surgeon says after the operation, the woman was delighted to run her hands over her face and feel her new features.
