Olive Branch looking forward to new movie theater

OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - In this tough economic crisis, one Mid-South community is adding a new business - a movie theater.

The Olive Branch Board of Aldermen recently approved a site on Goodman Road near Hamilton Road for the theater's location.

"We're excited about the possibility of Malco theatre building here," Mayor Sam Rikard said. "It's one of those projects that's been on the minds of our citizens for several years."

It has been more than 50 years since there was a movie theatre in the Olive Branch.  Rikard believes a new theater will provide a big boost to stimulate the local economy.

"A major factor in our revenue stream is the sales tax, and obviously when people go and buy movie tickets, that increases our sales tax revenue too, so its an economic boost for us," he said.

After years of talk about a new theater, resident Susan Johnson was glad Malco settled on a location.

"We want all the people to remain here in Olive Branch, shop in Olive Branch, and just come visit our town," she said. "It's a wonderful atmosphere here in Olive Branch."

It's now up to Malco to start building.
