Innocent bystander killed during Memphis gunfight

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police are looking for a group of men they say killed an innocent bystander overnight.  The shooting happened early Thursday morning at the McLemore Market on Sharpe in east Memphis.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, residents like Willie Matthews were still talking about what happened to the victim, who was gunned down while sitting in a truck in the store's parking lot.

"That's a tragedy," he said. "These folks with these guns, they just doing everything."

According to investigators, 45-year old Jake Walker was sitting behind the wheel of the truck, reportedly minding his own business, when several men inside the store got into a fight and started shooting.

Walker was apparently caught in the crossfire.

"It ain't like when I was coming up," Walker said. "Now, if you do something, they are going to get a gun."

Walker said he used to be an employee at the store, when crime wasn't such a problem.  Now, he said, things have changed.

"You just got to be careful," he said. "You never know what's going on these days."

Investigators are looking for four men they believe were involved in the gun battle.

Police are asking anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
