Memphis police warn residents of ATM robberies

Memphis police are warning residents to be on the lookout for an armed robber who's targeting customers at the city's ATM's.

Three victims were robbed in separate incidents on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

According to authorities, the suspect robbed people at gunpoint while they were alone and using an ATM after hours.

"After they make a withdrawal, he'll approach the victims," said Maj. Joe Scott of the Memphis Police Dept. "He will either show the weapon or indicate he has a weapon, and take the cash they've withdrawn."

Police say there have been as many as nine robberies at ATM's along North Watkins in Frayser since December 2.

Investigators believe the same person is responsible all the robberies.

"It's Christmas time and people don't have money, they don't have jobs," said Johnny Ward of Frayser. "So, a person is going to take to try to take care of his, they're going to try to take something from somebody else."
Police are urging people to use caution and be especially alert around ATM's this holiday season.

"Be leary of individuals who're just kind of hanging out, who don't really have a purpose," said Scott.

Anyone with information that can help investigators solve these robberies is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
