Body found at scene of afternoon fire

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police continue to investigate an incident in which a body was found at the scene of a Friday afternoon fire.

Officers responded to the scene around 1:30pm after they received a call about shots being fired at the Essex House Apartments.

When police arrived, they found firefighters battling a blaze at an upstairs apartment. Officers discovered a man lying face down on the apartment's kitchen floor.

Property manager Eddy Chester said the apartment has been vacant for some time. "The resident of that apartment had moved out 3 to 4 weeks ago. We've been having trouble with some vandals," he said. "Apparently somebody got in there and committed this crime."

Homicide investigators would not say if the man had any burns or physical injuries to his body.

Neighbors were shaken by the incident.

"My aunt said she heard gunshots," neighbor Jameca Shields said. "I was sleep. She woke me up and I came out to see all these police officers out here. It was shocking to see everything out here."

Authorities are working to determine who may be responsible for the blaze and the shots fired.

"We do not have any vehicle information or suspect information at this time," said Maj. C.W. Cox.
