11-year-old girl killed by stray bullet

Memphis police continue to investigate the shooting death of 11-year-old Kentaria Traylor in Frayser on Friday evening.

The shooting occured in the 2100 block of Burnham Cove around 5:00 p.m. Police say the little girl was struck by a stray bullet that entered the front window of her home.

No other family members were injured.

Family members say Kentaria was looking at her family's Christmas tree when she was shot.

She was transported in critical condition to LeBonheur, where she later died.

Family members described her as a happy, bubbly child and an honor roll student at Denver Elementary School. They said Kentaria's mother had bought her little girl everything on her Christmas wish list.

"The number one thing I'm thinking about is an 11-year-old who was expecting to wake up for Christmas Morning and enjoy Christmas with her mom, her dad, her little brother, her grandmother and the family," said Cathy Williamson, the girl's great aunt. "And now, instead of her waking up to enjoy this Christmas morning, her mom is getting ready to bury her 11-year-old daughter."

Kentaria's Godmother, Natalya Anderson, said Kentaria adored her baby brother, who was less than a year old. "And I'm sure he loved her, but he'll never know her because someone took her life," she said tearfully.

Family members told police that a male relative had argued with another man earlier in the day, and the shooting may have been in retaliation.

Police are searching for a suspect.
