National Menorah lighting marks start of Hannukah

WASHINGTON (NBC News) - The first night of Hanukkah was celebrated with the lighting of the first candle of the National Hanukkah Menorah.

The National Menorah is located at The Ellipse, near the White House in Washington, D.C.

Participants in today's lighting included Nachman Holtzberg, the father of Gavriel Holtzberg, who was killed in the Mumbai attacks.

Festivities at the lighting ceremony included hot latkes and a performance by The Three Cantors.

The eight-day Jewish holiday commemorates a military victory over the Greeks.

The lighting of the Menorah symbolizes the oil that burned in the Jewish holy temple for eight days instead of one.

Hanukkah began at sundown on Sunday evening.
